Indigo workshop in my backyard - which date is better for you?
UPDATE: The people have spoken and you have chosen
August 28 from 1 pm - 4 pm
for the workshop!
There’s still time to join - just email me and I’ll send the details and how to pay. (And if you are still interested in Sept 11, let me know that too. If there’s enough people, I will run that workshop as well!)
It’s been a little tricky to find a date for the backyard indigo workshop - but that means that everyone is getting out and rejoining the world, which is great news!
So I am going to offer two days to choose from and whichever gets more responses is the day we will pick! So choose from Sunday August 28 and Sunday September 11 for a potential workshop. Drop me an email and tell me which one or both you can attend. Read below for the details for the workshop!
Join me in my backyard in Guilford and dive into the wondrous world of indigo!
A brief breakdown of the workshop is as follows:
HISTORY: We begin with a brief history of indigo and discuss the various indigo growing regions across the world. I will focus on Japan and share my experience meeting with seventh-generation indigo farmers, dyers and designers in Tokushima on the island of Shikoku.
USING AN INDIGO VAT: We will discuss indigo as a dye, how it differs from other natural dyes, and practically, how dyers get the indigo to adhere to the fiber. We explore why the fabric is green when it is pulled out of the vat and then slowly turns blue.
SHIBORI: We will learn the resist dye technique called shibori and how it works with indigo. I will show several types of shibori bindings and how to maintain a healthy vat while dyeing. Then we will spend the remainder of the class dipping our prepped textiles in the vat multiple times to achieve rich color and pattern. I will provide cleaning and care instructions to implement at home.
FEE: Your $80 fee includes workshop materials and instruction (prepared organic indigo vat, equipment for shibori and dyeing the fiber, handouts with instructions/resources and two prepped 100% cotton tea towels ready for you to dye, light refreshments.) For an additional $30 you can swap out one of the tea towels for a silk scarf (14” x 72”.)
RESERVE YOUR SPOT: email Laura at laura@toccostudio.com.
Please bring a pair of long dishwashing gloves and consider wearing an apron or clothes you don’t mind getting blue.
Cancellation policy: If you cancel within 5 days of the class you can receive a 50% refund (unless we can fill your spot.) We will be practicing current COVID protocols.
